Wendell Jones

Wendell C. Jones, Jr. is a 4th generation
horseman. His family’s involvement with horses began with his great
grandfather who lived outside of Flemingsburg, KY.
His grandfather, O. Wendell Jones began his career as
a young man in the mid 1920’s when he was hired to ride sale
horses. He moved from Kentucky to New York City and made a name for
himself managing some of the top Saddle horse stables in the country.
He trained and showed some of the best Roadsters in the country, among
them Vicksburg, Avalon Major and Symbol Land. He was also the only
trainer to ever defeat in the show ring Winged Commander, possibly
the greatest Saddlebred of all time.
O. Wendell Jones won Championships at Devon, Lexington and Madison
Square Garden.

Wendell C Jones, Sr. has the distinction of having
trained horses of two different breeds that became world champions
and top breeding sires. He trained the Saddle horse New Look and the
leading trotting sire in the world, Balanced Image. Wendell, Sr. was also an AHSA judge. Now in his seventies, he is still
riding.
Wendell C Jones, Jr. began riding at a very early
age. He and his two brothers and sister worked at his father’s
riding academy while growing up. He and his family have shown at
Devon, Lexington
and Madison Square Gardens. Wendell graduated from Valley Forge Military
Academy and while there was co-captain of the varsity polo team and
played in tournaments across the country. He was awarded the prestigious
Foley Medal for most outstanding cadet in the mounted battalion, completing
the course in US Calvary Horsemanship. He continued to play polo for
several years with Ben Forney and the Lancaster Polo Club. Wendell
began giving riding lessons in the 1970’s and then embarked on
a career in the racing industry, selecting, breaking and training Thoroughbreds
and Standardbreds. He holds an “A” license in driving and
training of Pacers and Trotters. Wendell started his own riding school
in the 1990’s, which continues to thrive and grow. Wendell Jones
Stable continues to be one of the oldest horse stables in operation
on the east coast.
